Strategy for the Sustainable Quarrying and Mining Development
27/08/2008
In May 2004, a study titled “Strategy for Sustainable Quarrying and Mining Development of Cyprus 2001 - 2025” was executed. This study, among others, showed that the various quarry materials reserves of strategic importance which are used for the building industry and exports need to be protected from other developments. This way, they will remain available for exploitation for the future. Practically, the protection and the availability of these reserves are expressed with the creation of a Quarry Zone in each case.

Having in mind the above basic conclusion, the Department of Geological Survey and the Mines Service, submitted proposals for the modification of the existing and the creation of new Quarry Zones. These proposals were evaluated by a Special Technical Committee. The committee consisted of the Townplanning and Housing Department, the Environment Service, the Department of Forests, the Department of Geological Survey and the Mines Service. The evaluated proposals were forwarded to the Minister of the Interior, who declared a Quarry Zone in each case which had been passed from the evaluation by publishing a relevant notification in the Official Journal of the Republic.

Based on the conclusions of the above study, today a detailed study is in the process of being prepared, which will show how essential it is for the creation of a new Quarry Zone in the Paphos District, in order to cover the demand of aggregates for the production of concrete and bituminous mixtures.
