The Director of Mines and Quarries Service is responsible for the administration and organization of the Service, ensures the implementation of the legislations for which he is responsible and exercises the powers granted to him by these legislations. He is also an adviser to the Government on technical National issues related to the country's mineral wealth and acts as a liaison between the Government, Mining Companies and Researchers.

Director of Mines and Quarries Service must be a qualified Mining Engineer with a minimum of ten years of post-graduate experience, of which at least five in management positions. Also, alongside his other duties, is appointed by the Ministerial Council to act as Inspector of Explosives.

The Director of Mines and Quarries Service, alongside his other duties, is appointed by the Cabinet to act as Inspector of Explosives.

The Director of Mines and Quarries Service is Mr. Stelios Michael since 2021, who is a qualified Mining Engineer-Metallurgist from the National Technical University of Athens.

According to Law N.169(I)/2023, from 01/01/2024 the Head of Mines Service is renamed to Director of Mines and Quarries Service.
