The Mines and Quarries Service is responsible for the implementation of the Mines and Quarries Law and Regulations and the Explosive Substances Law and Regulations. It is also an advisor to the State on technical matters related to the country's mineral wealth and acts as a link between the Government, Mining Companies and Researchers.
The aim of the Mines and Quarries Service is the rational development of the mineral wealth of Cyprus, through activities that minimize the impact of this development on the environment so as to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for the workers in the sector as well as the provision of excellent quality products to the market.

In order to achieve the above objectives, the Mines and Quarries Service is organized in such a way as to cope with the following main activities:

  • Issuance of Research Permits, Quarry Privileges, Mining Leases and the control of compliance with the terms of their granting.
  • The examination of the Management Environmental Studies for the main relevant holdings.
  • The control of safety and health conditions in mines, quarries and related facilities.
  • The control of the import, storage, sale and use of explosives, fireworks and ammunition.
  • The collection of fees, leases, rents and royalties for research, exploitation and explosive materials.
