Egly Pantelakis, was born in Nicosia. She is a graduate of the English School Nicosia and of the Cyprus National Music Conservatory. She studied economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.) of the University of London and did post graduate studies in Administrative Sciences, in the City University of London. In 1994, she successfully completed the workshop in environmental economics of the Institute for International Development of the Harvard University.
From 1978, until March 14, 2010, she worked in the Planning Bureau. Since 2003 she held the position of Director of Planning in the directorate of development policy. She served as National Coordinator (at a technocratic level) for the promotion of the Lisbon Strategy, and also has coordinated the preparation of the Strategic Development Plan 2007 – 2013. In addition to the duties of the position she held in the Planning Bureau, on July 6, 2009 she was appointed Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment. On 15 March 2010, she was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.
She took part at Working Groups which negotiated the issues of the broader agricultural sector, within the framework of the Customs Union and later of the accession of Cyprus to the European Union, as well as in conferences about water resources, organized in Middle Eastern countries, by the World Bank. She represented Cyprus at various ministerial conferences and Councils of Ministers of Agriculture/Fisheries and Environment of the European Union, at the General Assembly of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Rome – November 2009), the International UN Conference on Climate Change (Copenhagen – December 2009), the high-level meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Nagoya – October 2010), at the 26th session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (Nairobi, February 2011), at the 8th Regular Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (Geneva – December 2011), at the 6th World Water Forum (Marseille – March 2012) and at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio de Janeiro – June 2012).
By virtue of her position as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, she is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Insurance Organization. She is also Chairman of the Board for Veterinary Medicinal Products, the Advisory Committee on the Protection of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin of agricultural products and food, the Water Management Consultative Committee and the Council for Agricultural Research and Development.
Ms Egly Pantelakis, was a member of the Town Planning Commission and the Board of Directors of the European Lifelong Learning Programmes Foundation. She is also a member of the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management (CPTM), while she was a founding member and a member of the Executive Committee of the “Friends of the L.S.E. in Cyprus” Society.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment
