Activities of the Analytical Laboratories Section

    1. Pesticide Formulations Laboratory
·The quality control of pesticide formulations is foreseen in the Pesticides Law of 1993 to 2004.
·The quality control includes the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the active ingredient, the physicochemical properties as well as the determination of any undesirable substances. The tolerance limits of the active ingredient are in accordance with the Directive 91/414/EC.
·The quality control of pesticide formulations is carried out according to the annual program. Sampling is carried out by authorized inspectors at the production level as well as at the retail level.
·The laboratory provides services to the private sector on payment.

    2. Pesticide Residues Laboratory
·The Laboratory implements in accordance to the Pesticides Law of 1993 to 2004 a program of preventive monitoring of the pesticide residues which is designed for the control of Good Agriculture Practice as well as any use of non-registered pesticide formulations.
·Sampling is carried out by authorized inspectors during or after harvesting and the samples are sent to the Laboratory for analysis.
·The main agricultural products covered by the program are vegetables, grapes, strawberries, citrus, various fruit (pome and stone fruit) and potatoes.
·Furthermore, samples are analyzed originating from organic farming.
·The laboratory provides services to the private sector on payment.
·The laboratory participates annually in Interlaboratory Proficiency Schemes.
·The accredited methods of the laboratory as well as the field of application can be found at the website of CYS-CYSAB (Cyprus Organization for the Promotion of Quality).

    3. Feeding stuffs, Fertilizers and Leaves Laboratory
    3.1 Feeding stuffs
The Feeding Stuffs, Fertilizers and Leaves Laboratory is the National Reference Laboratory for the control of feedingstuffs. The control is implemented in accordance with Reg. (EC) 882/2004 for the official control of feeds and food for their compliance with the rules of animal health and welfare.
    The controls include:
·Quality control for the nutritional parameters according to the labeling
·Determination of undesirable substances (mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticide residues, coccidiostads, dioxins, PCB΄s in accordance to Regulation (EC) 574/2011
    ·Microbiological control
·Control for the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
·The laboratory provides services to the private sector on payment
·The laboratory participates in the annual meetings of the European Reference Laboratories on Feed Additives, Heavy Metals and Mycotoxins
·The laboratory participates annually in Interlaboratory Proficiency Schemes
·The accredited methods of the laboratory as well as the field of application can be found at the website of CYS-CYSAB (Cyprus Organization for the Promotion of Quality).
    3.2 Fertilizers
The quality control of fertilizers is in accordance with the fertilizers Control Law of 32(I)/2006 as well as the Regulation (EC) 2003/2003.
·Control of the major nutritional elements (N,P,K), the secondary nutritional elements (Ca, S, Mg) and trace elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo).
·Control for undesirable substances e.g. heavy metals.
·The laboratory provides services to the private sector on payment.
    3.3 Leaves
·Leaf analysis for fertilization purposes and nutritional deficiencies
·Analysis of forest leaves for the monitoring of the effect of acid rain on forests
    3.4 Appellation of controlled origin
3.5 Control of water content in frozen poultry

    4. Soils and Water Laboratory
    4.1 Soils
·Analysis of soils is carried out for fertilization purposes, for the determination of physicochemical parameters of soil for the application of sludge on soils and for the effect of acid rain on forests
    4.2 Water
·Analysis of water is carried out for irrigation uses, for the monitoring of the effect of acid rain on forests and on nutrient solutions used in hydroponics
