The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, has two research stations which promotes scientific research and technological development on aquaculture. These are the Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Center (Larnaca) and the Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station in Kalopanayiotis (Troodos).

Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Center (CyMARC)

The CyMARC is the only research station dedicated to marine aquaculture research in Cyprus. It participates in numerous European and other research programs and promotes research and development in the sector of marine aquaculture. Specifically, the research programs of the MeMARS are mainly focused on the reproduction and farming of the so called “new species” i.e. greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili), meagre (Argyrosomus regius), red bream (Pagrus pagrus), Japanese red bream (Pagrus major), rabbitifsh (Siganus rivulatus), octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and pandora (Pagellus erythrinus). Additionally, experiments are conducted on new technology for the production of live food such as rotifers and artemia.

Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station (Kalopanagiotis)

The Kalopanayiotis Research Station is responsible for the management of the biodiversity of the inland waters (fish stocking), the recreational fisheries and supplies the FW aquaculture private firms with trout and sturgeon fingerlings.

In the Kalopanayiotis Research Station, it is taking place with success the ​​reproduction of trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta) and sturgeon (Acipenser baeri). Several species of carp (i.e. Cyprinus carpio, Carassius carassius) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) are also cultured.

It is important to mention that the station cultures various types of freshwater fish, for the purpose of restocking dams that have previously dried out.

Additionally, the dams are enriched each year with about 20,000 trout produced in Kalopanayiotis Research Station for purposes of enriching the existing populations as well as for the promotion of recreational fishing.
