Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)

The CITES Convention aims to ensure that international trade in wildlife and plant specimens does not threaten their survival.

The Convention operates by implementing control to the international trade of selected species and their specimens. All imports, exports, re-exports and imports from the sea of items covered by the Convention must be authorized through a licensing system. Specifically, the Customs Department inspects the marketable items in the various ports and airports of the state and the species of flora and fauna, then refers to the Department of Environment which with the help of a competent Scientific Committee consisting of representatives of the competent Departments and Services, studies and decides whether their import / export may be approved.

The items covered by CITES are listed in 3 Annexes, depending on the degree of protection they need.

The Convention has been signed by 172 countries, including Cyprus, which has ratified the Convention on 18/10/1974 with the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Law [L.20 / 1974].
