FLEGT
On 15 November 2016, the Department of Forests launched the implementation of the FLEGT Voluntary Licensing Scheme for Timber Imports and Timber Products in the European Union Law 125 (I) / 2010 - O Law of 2010 and the European Union Regulations No. 2173/2005 and 1024/2008. The implementation of the Law includes checks, acceptance or rejection of FLEGT licenses, as well as physical checks on goods at points of entry into the Republic of Cyprus.
To date, only Indonesia has issued FLEGT licenses, while five (5) countries have signed a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the European Union (EU) and have developed the systems required to control, verify and the issuing of the FLEGT license, while another nine (9) countries are in negotiations with the EU. Also, 11 other countries have expressed an interest in starting negotiations. The first imports of timber consignments accompanied by a FLEGT license were made from Indonesia to Cyprus in December 2016.
