Fire Safety Guide for the Public


According to forest fire statistics, 9 out of 10 forest fires are caused by human activities, most of which due to negligence. For this reason and in order to prevent forest fires, special attention is required when we visit forested areas and some basic rules are needed to be followed.

(a) Instructions for people visiting the forests

  • Do not throw away burning cigarette butts or matches.
  • Advise children not to play with matches, lighters, cigarettes or candles.
  • Lighting of fire for food preparation is only allowed in specially constructed grills, that can be found at picnic and camping sites.
  • Before you depart from the picnic site, make sure that the charcoal lit is completely extinguished.
  • Avoid travelling through forested areas without reason and always follow the prohibitive signs.
  • Camping in the forest is only allowed in the camping sites.
  • The discharge of flammable substances and other garbage in the state forest is prohibited.
  • If you notice someone in the forest proceeding into actions, with increased possibility of a fire outbreak, try to convince him and immediately inform the Department of Forests.
  • In case you see smoke or fire, please inform immediately the Department of Forests through the telephone number 1407.

(b) Instructions for farmers and other people working near forested areas
  • Do not throw away burning cigarette butts or matches.
  • The burning of agricultural remnants is prohibited.
  • Avoid using welding, circular saw or any other equipment that produces sparks; frequently the use of such equipment causes fires.
  • If you own and use electric or motorized water pump, keep the surrounding area clean of grass and flammable materials.
  • Avoid storing flammable material in your property.
  • Construct and maintain clean, a firebreak at the perimeter of your property.
  • Place around your property fountains or extinguishers with water hoses, with a length that reaches to every part of your property.
  • Supply with fire extinguishers and other firefighting tools (spades, shovels etc).
  • If you notice someone in the forest proceeding into actions, with increased possibility of a fire outbreak, try to convince him and immediate inform the Department of Forests.
  • In case you see smoke or fire, please inform immediately the Department of Forests through the telephone number 1407.

(c) Instructions for permanent or periodical residents in forested areas
  • Do not throw away burning cigarette butts or matches and avoid burning rubbish, dry grass or branches in your courtyard.
  • Advise children not to play with matches, lighters, cigarettes or candles.
  • Avoid using welding, circular saw or any other equipment that produces sparks; frequently the use of such equipment causes fires.
  • If you own and use electric or motorized water pump, keep the surrounding area clean of grass and flammable materials.
  • If you intend to light a fire for food preparation, this should be done in a specially constructed area (grill or oven), after cleaning the surrounding area thoroughly of all dry grass and other inflammable material.
  • Keep every corner of your yard and if possible within a radius of 3 m, free of loose, dried grass and leaves, and any other flammable material. Also keep your house's roof clean from leaves or needles that fall into it.
  • Keep the trees in your yard constantly pruned up to 1/3 of their height and in case of tall trees at a height of 3 meters above the ground; remove all dry branches from trees and shrubs. If there are any branches touching the walls of your residence, prune them.
  • Do not store flammable material in your yard.
  • Place around your house fountains or extinguishers with water hoses, with a length that reaches to every part of your house and the yard.
