Research and Projects

The study of the Risk Assessment due to the Presence of the Asbestos Mine, Troodos commenced in 2003 and was completed in 2006. The study included sampling and analyses for identification and counting of asbestos fibres in the atmospheric air, ground and surface waters, soil and bedrock for the area within the borders of and surrounding the mine.
The methodology that was developed for bigger precision and reliability purposes for results of analyses of air samples ensured long time duration of sample collection for each station (for atmospheric air) and low detection limit of asbestos fibres of each sample during the laboratorial examination. With this method, the bigger possible entrapment of asbestos fibres was achieved during the sampling procedures. Furthermore, the monitoring of fluctuation of concentrations in differentiated meteorological conditions allowed better interpretation and more equitable management of the results.
Based on the interpretation and evaluation of the analyses of the collected samples, a Model of Dispersion of asbestos fibres in the atmosphere was produced. The Model was utilized to determine the risk assessment of the region, which constituted the main objective of the study.
