Digital Seismological Network of Cyprus (2014)

During 2012-2013, the Geological Survey Department has completed a full upgrade of the Seismological Network and Centres to meet the latest technological advances in seismology.

The new seismological network (see map above and table below) is comprised of 12 local seismological stations (10 in-land and 2 off-shore), 8 of which are fully owned and maintained by the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus. The new digital network has earned Cyprus a place for the first time in the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks -- FDSN under the national seismological network code “CQ”.

During 2012-2013, the equipment of the nine seismological stations, the two seismological centres and the satellite communication network, were supplied and installed by Nanometrics Inc., through an international tendering procedure. The remote seismological stations are equipped with broadband, 3-component seismometers of high sensitivity, digitisers and autonomous solar powering systems. All stations transmit continuous data in real-time, though a private satellite network (VSAT), to two seismological data processing centres: one at Lefkosia (main centre) and one at Mathiatis village (backup centre). A second level of data transmission (backup) is functional at 4 stations. The data communication between stations and seismological centres is two-way, enabling the remote monitoring and maintenance of the remote stations.

The locations of the 9 stations were chosen based on criteria such as the best geographical coverage, geological setting (bedrock) of the site, accessibility, land ownership, level of natural or cultural seismic noise and level of security of the station. The stations are located in Alefka, Akamas, Nata, Souni, Asgata, Troulloi, Paralimni and Athalassa (Lefkosia) – see relevant map above and table below. Additionally the network includes the permanent station of Mathiatis, which has been operational since 1998 in the GEOFON network of GFZ (Potsdam, Germany) and 2 ocean-bottom-seismometers in the south of Cyprus, which have been operational since mid-2013 by CSnet International Inc..

Each seismological station is comprised of:
1. A 3-component seismometer installed in a vault at a depth of 1-1.5m.
2. A digitizer which digitizes the continuous signal at a rate of 100 samples/second.
3. A satellite modem for bi-directional data communication between the station and the seismological centres.
4. A satellite dish for data communication.
5. A GPRS modem at 4 stations and backup data transmission via terrestrial internet.
6. A GPS sensor for accurate timing.
7. A private solar powering system (solar cells, batteries and relevant electronics).
