Research and Projects

Information on ground properties is necessary for many construction projects, for the design of thermal energy storage equipment and for calculating heat losses of buildings to the ground. With the growing need for conservation of energy, this information is important for the possible use of the ground as a source for heat pump applications and heat storage.

Project was funded by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus in 2008 and ended in February 2011, where temperatures and some ground properties were recorded in only six locations in Cyprus. Cyprus covers a wide area with frequent geological variations, changing from pyroclastic material to calcitic and their sedimentations.

Moreover, temperatures are also recorded by Morgan in 1973 and together with the six locations measured in 2008-2010 an accurate temperature profile for the Cyprus area was made possible. What is still lacking is adequate information concerning the specific heat, density and thermal conductivity of the ground in a variety of geological formations.
