Geological Heritage


The Cyprus Geological Survey Department, recognizing its great responsibility for the protection, conservation and promotion of the geological and mining heritage of the island, initiated in 2011, a collaboration project with other governmental and private sectors, which today constitute the coordinating committee of the Troodos UNESCO Global Geopark, for the creation of all the necessary infrastructure, for the operation of a geopark in the heart of the Troodos Mountain Range. Within the framework of this project, the Visitors Centre of the Troodos Geopark was created, which includes a museum with exhibits highlighting the geological, mining, natural and cultural heritage of the area. Furthermore, 3 geotrails were created, a website (http: //www.troodos- geo.org) with GIS-applications for the sites of geological significance (geosites), proposed tours within the geopark territory and UNESCO Global Geoparks, an ecotouristic guide, touristic and geological maps, posters, documentary films regarding the creation of the Troodos Ophiolite complex, promotional videos, as well as numerous directional and informative signs.
