Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island with a surface area of 9251 sq. km. It lies in the north-eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea approximately centred on latitude 35° N and longitude 33° E.

The island is divided into four geological Terranes: (a) the Keryneia Terrane (b) the Troodos Terrane (or Troodos Ophiolite complex) (c) the Mamonia Terrane and (d) the Circum Troodos Sedimentary Succession.
