Reptiles

Hide details for Natrix natrix cypriacaNatrix natrix cypriaca

The most endangered reptile in Cyprus. Found near permanent or quasi permanent water bodies. The main threat for the species is the destruction of suitable habitats and the persecution.
The priorities for the species are:
-Data on the species distribution. Reevaluate know distribution localities and probably locate new sites.
-Validate threats regarding habitat alterations: Pinpoint specific problems for each site.
-Create suitable microhabitats in know localities as to mitigate immediate problems of safe refuge for the animal.
-Validate threats regarding predators and introduced species.
-Through genetics locate possible discontinuities of subpopulations and relations with the mainland mother-species.
-Try to directly increase population via a captive breeding program.

Hide details for Hierophis cypriensisHierophis cypriensis

A naturally rare species. Prefers the high mountain forests (500 - 1400m). Very few known localities. Also found near water (possibly due to higher prey availability). Persecution and logging are reported but not validated.
Priorities for the species are:
-Data on the species distribution. Find new localities as to better describe the species’ area of distribution. Through this, to clarify the species habitat preferences.
-Create suitable microhabitats in known localities.
-Through genetics, locate possible discontinuities of subpopulations.
