Hide details for Hierophis cypriensisHierophis cypriensis

A naturally rare species. Prefers the high mountain forests (500 - 1400m). Very few known localities. Also found near water (possibly due to higher prey availability). Persecution and logging are reported but not validated.
Priorities for the species are:
-Data on the species distribution. Find new localities as to better describe the species’ area of distribution. Through this, to clarify the species habitat preferences.
-Create suitable microhabitats in known localities.
-Through genetics, locate possible discontinuities of subpopulations.

Hide details for Mauremys rivulataMauremys rivulata

A hardy species. It can tolerate degraded habitats, including pollution, destruction, competitors. However, the combined effects of the three has had a devastating effect on the species populations in Cyprus. The species occurs in very few localities and with few individuals. The threats for the species include the destruction of habitats, the pollution and the invasive species which compete with Mauremys, namely Trachemys scripta.
The priorities are:
1. Removal of the competitors.
2. Alleviate direct threats to the species due to human interventions.
3. Establish populations in new localities, possibly through a captive breeding program or direct translocation of existing animals if size of extant populations allow for this.
