The inspection of mines and quarries in Cyprus began during colonial times with a rudimentary structure within the Department of Public Works. In 1925, this structure evolved into a separate Mines Sector of the Public Works Department, with inspections being undertaken by a qualified Mines Inspector.

In 1930, this Sector was administratively included in the Department of Cadastre and Surveying and was maintained until 1960, shortly after the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus.

In 1961, this Sector evolved into a Department of Mines under the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus, while in 1981 it was renamed as Mines Service.

From 1993 until today, the Mines Service is under the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, which in 2015 was renamed as the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

From 01/01/2024, in accordance with Law Ν. 169(I)/2023, Mines Service was renamed to Mines and Quarries Service as well as the Head of Mines Service to the Director of Mines and Quarries Service.
