The quarrying industry of Cyprus is intensely activated. There are about 109 quarries that produce various rocks and industrial minerals. From these quarries 19 are in the final stage of their operation and the restoration of the area.
For inland use the following are produced:
- Havaras* for embankments and roads sub base.
- Aggregates mainly from limestone and diabase for the needs of the building industry and other constructions (roads etc).
- Limestone, clay and gypsum as raw material for the production of cement.
- Limestone for the production of lime.
- Clay for bricks and tiles.
- Gypsum for the production of plasters.
- Sandstone for the production of wall cover and building stone.
Cyprus is considered self sufficient regarding raw material for buildings, roads, harbors, dams and other constructional works.
The country’s main exports are:
- Bentonite (activated or not) that is exported mainly under the form of graded product for domestic use (cat- litter).
- Graded gypsum for the needs of cement and plasters production.
- Grinded umber and ochre for production of paints.
- Lime, cement, plasters and building stones.
