1 To which Ministry does the Meteorological Department belong?


The Meteorological Department is a department under the administration of the Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development and Environment.

2 When was the Meteorological Service established?


The first Meteorological Office was established in 1957 with the appointment of one Meteorologist and two assistants.
On the 1st of January 2014 the Meteorological Service was renamed to Department of Meteorology

3 When were the first outdoor meteorological observations carried out in Cyprus?


The first outdoor meteorological observations were carried out in Larnaka in the period 1866-1870 by the British Vice-consulate Thomas B. Sandwith.

1 Upper air Station at Athalassa
39 Climatological Stations
111 Rainfall Stations
18 Automatic Meteorological Stations
The R.A.F. operates a Synoptic Station at Akrotiri
