Xyliatos Dam Overspilling

Following the recent increased river flows, significant amounts of water were impounded in the Cyprus dams. The total inflow for the period 01/10/2011 to 14/01/2012 was over 29 million cubic metres of water.

A number of small dams such as the Klirou-Malounta-Akaki dam started to overspill. Xyliatos dam with a capacity of 1,43 million cubic metres, started to overspill at around midnight on 13/14 January 2012.

It is expected that other small dams, such as Pomos and Argaka dams, will overspill in the next few days.

The overall amount of water in the dams is still relatively low (50% of total capacity) and the Water Development Department advises the public to continue to conserve water and use it in the most rational way possible.
