This research project, which was approved and funded by the Research Promotion Foundation, dealt with the characterization of structural and decorative stones used in Cyprus. The contractor was a Mosaic and Marble Industry Association with partners for the research work of the Department of Geological Survey, the University of Cyprus (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) and the Institute of Geological and Mining Research of Greece.
This research project was aimed at:
(a) the detailed inventory of all available types of building and decorative stones in Cyprus, as well as the quarries from which they are quarried.
(b) the physico-mechanical and chemical characterization of the natural stones of Cyprus.
(c) the development of a database with information on the geological and geographic origin, mineralogical composition and characteristics of the natural stones of Cyprus.
(d) the study of possible correlations between the different physico-mechanical properties of the building stones, as well as the investigation of the effect of the geometry of the particular materials on their properties.
(e) to study the mechanisms of crystallization of various salts and their effect on the resistance of natural stones.
(f) promoting and supporting the CE marking process for natural stone products produced and marketed in the Cypriot market.
(g) the submission to the competent national authorities of national parameters governing the quality of local natural stones. More information about the program can be found at webpage:
