Geological Heritage

In accordance with the Geological Surveys Law of 2013 (Law 140 (I) / 2013), actions are taken for the study, documentation, promotion and protection of significant geosites, ultimately aiming towards the protection and promotion of the geological and mining heritage of the island.

In the framework of protecting the geological heritage, the Geological Survey Department continues the paleontological excavation rich in fossilized bones of pygmy hippos at the Agia Napa area, which is located inside the sculpture park. Up until 2019, ten (10) excavation periods have been carried out, by the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

During 2019, the Geological Survey Department in collaboration with the Agia Napa Municipality, proceeded to the construction of a canopy to protect and promote the excavation site, but also to make the site accessible to the public in the future. Due to its great significance, a fence will be installed at the excavation site, in order to protect it.
